Worried about Job Security?
In 2020, the world changed. The impact of the global pandemic is something that most people won’t have ever experienced in their lifetime.
What started as a news report back in December 2019 about some sort of lockdown in China, has now become the biggest global peacetime impact that most of us will ever know about.
Gradually what initially appeared to be a flu-like virus just in China, has now circled the planet, and the impact on economies, way of life, and businesses, which has subsequently affected people’s job security, is on a scale not seen before.
I can remember writing in one of my books a couple of years ago, about the impact things like the last recession and the banking crisis caused, especially as I was working in sales and business development at the time, but the effect of coronavirus is sadly on another level.
Almost daily we now hear about businesses closing down, some of which are brands and companies that my generation have grown up with and felt like they have been around forever.
Whilst all my usual thread of topics aimed towards explaining the “Why Digital” was often due to helping people escape the so-called “9 to 5” rat-race, daily commutes, workplace stress, and the “dream” of wanting to create a better lifestyle solution, in fact for literally thousands of people, sadly that “9 to 5” was taken away overnight whether they liked it or not anyway.
My previous aim was to help people realise the potentials of digital opportunities and “gradually” prepare, to learn about the possibilities, and to create the foundations behind the scenes so that they would be in a better position to have their own “plan b” and an alternative to the 9 to 5 life they currently had.
Coronavirus has just suddenly changed everything, for everyone, and created urgency.
That all said, let’s be honest, the high street retail sector was already having a hard time before coronavirus was even heard of, because online shopping was more common place, and government and local authorities applying high business rates, and even parking restrictions, were already gradually helping the demise of the high street as we once knew it, but that situation was accelerated almost overnight by coronavirus.
But the point is, even if you had thought about it previously but just wasn’t quite ready, the emphasis on being able to work from home has now never before been so high on people’s agenda.
Sadly, I think this situation has only just begun. Global economies, recessions and job losses are only just starting, especially as furlough schemes are phased out. I already know people who have been made redundant because their bosses knew that once the furlough schemes stop, there is no way to pay peoples wages.
None of us know what’s around the corner, some scientists are even predicting future pandemics, at a time when the current one might not yet have even seen its worst.
With very realistic talks of second and third waves, there is no time to lose.
This stretches far beyond just the high street now though, manufacturing, and other sectors have been affected too.
The focus for online opportunities is NOW.
A few years ago, people were still suspicious of ordering things online. These days it’s a normal thing to do. But, in order to take advantage of online opportunities, you need to get ahead of the game, and get on board before your potential competitors do it first…
